Hidden MenusEasy#1

The Secret Diagnostic Screen

Every Roku has a hidden diagnostic screen that shows signal strength, system info, and lets you run network tests. Most users never know it exists.

How to do it:

  1. 1Go to the Roku Home screen
  2. 2Press: Home x5, Fast Forward x3, Rewind x2
  3. 3A secret menu appears with system diagnostics, network info, and developer options

Pro Tip

Use this to check your Wi-Fi signal strength if streaming is choppy. Anything below -65 dBm means you need a better connection.

Free Private Listening (No Headphone Jack Needed)

Stream audio directly to your phone's headphones โ€” completely free, no special hardware required. Perfect for late-night watching without waking anyone up.

How to do it:

  1. 1Download the free Roku app on your iPhone or Android
  2. 2Connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi as your Roku
  3. 3Open the app and tap the headphone icon in the remote tab
  4. 4Plug in your headphones โ€” audio now plays through your phone

Pro Tip

Works with any headphones, including AirPods. The Roku app is 100% free.

The * Button Unlocks Hidden Options

The asterisk (*) button on your Roku remote is one of the most underused features. Press it on almost any screen to reveal a context menu with hidden options.

How to do it:

  1. 1On the Home screen: press * on any app to get Move, Remove, Add to Favorites options
  2. 2While watching: press * to access audio/subtitle settings, picture quality, and closed captions
  3. 3In the Channel Store: press * on any channel to see ratings and reviews

Pro Tip

You can rearrange your home screen apps by pressing * and selecting 'Move'. Put your most-used free apps at the top!

Reduce Buffering With One Setting

If your free apps buffer constantly, there's a hidden bandwidth setting that can dramatically improve streaming quality on slower connections.

How to do it:

  1. 1Go to Settings โ†’ Network โ†’ Check Connection
  2. 2Then go to Settings โ†’ Display Type
  3. 3If you're on a slower connection, set to 1080p instead of 4K โ€” free apps rarely need 4K and it cuts bandwidth use by 60%
  4. 4Also try: Settings โ†’ Advanced System Settings โ†’ Advanced Display Settings โ†’ Auto-adjust display refresh rate โ†’ Disable

Pro Tip

Disabling auto-adjust refresh rate eliminates the black screen flash that happens when switching between apps.

Instant Closed Captions on Any App

Toggle closed captions on any app instantly without digging through menus โ€” even on apps that hide the caption settings.

How to do it:

  1. 1While watching anything, press the * button
  2. 2Select 'Closed Captioning'
  3. 3Or go to Settings โ†’ Accessibility โ†’ Captions mode โ†’ Always on

Pro Tip

Setting captions to 'Always on' in system settings overrides individual app settings โ€” useful for apps that make captions hard to find.

Mirror Your Phone Screen for Free

Cast your entire phone screen to your TV โ€” photos, videos, websites, anything โ€” completely free without needing Chromecast or Apple TV.

How to do it:

  1. 1On Roku: Settings โ†’ System โ†’ Screen Mirroring โ†’ Screen Mirroring Mode โ†’ Always Allow
  2. 2On Android: pull down notification shade โ†’ Screen Cast or Smart View โ†’ select your Roku
  3. 3On iPhone: use AirPlay (works on Roku devices with AirPlay support) or the Roku app

Pro Tip

This works great for showing vacation photos on the big screen or watching videos from apps that don't have a Roku channel.

Hidden ChannelsIntermediate#7

Add Secret Channels Not in the Store

Roku has hundreds of 'non-certified' channels that don't appear in the Channel Store but can be added with a secret code. These are legitimate channels from real broadcasters.

How to do it:

  1. 1Go to my.roku.com on your computer or phone (log in with your Roku account)
  2. 2Click 'Add Channel' and enter the channel code
  3. 3The channel will appear on your Roku within a few minutes
  4. 4Example codes: HILLARY (FilmRise), TWIT (TWiT Tech Podcast Network), OUTDOORS (Outdoor Channel Extra)

Pro Tip

These are 100% legal channels โ€” they just haven't gone through Roku's full certification process yet. Many are from legitimate broadcasters testing new content.

Set Up Parental Controls in 2 Minutes

Lock down your Roku so kids can only access age-appropriate content โ€” even on free apps like Tubi and Pluto TV that have mature content.

How to do it:

  1. 1Settings โ†’ Parental Controls โ†’ Enable Parental Controls
  2. 2Set a 4-digit PIN
  3. 3Set content rating limits (G, PG, PG-13, R, etc.)
  4. 4Enable 'Require PIN to add channels' to prevent kids from installing new apps

Pro Tip

You can also set up a Kids & Family profile in the Roku Channel (free) which creates a completely separate kid-safe browsing experience.

Hidden FeaturesEasy#9

Hidden Sleep Timer

Fall asleep to your favorite free shows without worrying about wasting electricity all night. Roku has a built-in sleep timer most people never find.

How to do it:

  1. 1Go to Settings โ†’ System โ†’ Time โ†’ Sleep Timer
  2. 2Choose 30 minutes, 1 hour, 1.5 hours, 2 hours, or 3 hours
  3. 3Your Roku will automatically turn off after the selected time

Pro Tip

Combine this with Tubi's 'Are you still watching?' auto-pause feature for the ultimate hands-free sleep setup.

PerformanceEasy#10

Switch Channels Instantly (No Home Screen)

Stop going back to the Home screen every time you want to switch apps. There's a faster way that most Roku users don't know about.

How to do it:

  1. 1Press the Home button once to go to the Home screen
  2. 2Or: press the Back button repeatedly to exit an app
  3. 3Better: double-tap the Home button to see your recently used channels โ€” switch instantly

Pro Tip

The double-tap Home shortcut shows your last 5 apps. Much faster than navigating the full home screen grid.

PerformanceEasy#11

Check If You're Actually Getting 4K

Many people think they're watching 4K but they're actually getting 1080p. Here's how to verify your free apps are delivering the best quality.

How to do it:

  1. 1While watching, press * on your remote
  2. 2Select 'Options' or 'Bitrate Override'
  3. 3Look for the resolution indicator โ€” it should show 2160p for 4K
  4. 4If not, go to Settings โ†’ Display Type and make sure it's set to your TV's actual resolution

Pro Tip

Tubi and Pluto TV do offer some 4K content for free. The Roku Channel has a dedicated 4K section. Make sure you're not leaving quality on the table.

PerformanceEasy#12

Test Your Internet Speed Right on Roku

Before blaming your free app for buffering, check if your internet is actually the problem โ€” right from your Roku without any extra apps.

How to do it:

  1. 1Settings โ†’ Network โ†’ Check Connection
  2. 2Roku will run a speed test and show your download speed
  3. 3For smooth free streaming: 3 Mbps minimum for HD, 25 Mbps for 4K
  4. 4If speed is fine but buffering persists, the app's servers are the issue (common during peak hours 7โ€“10 PM)

Pro Tip

Free streaming apps like Tubi and Pluto TV sometimes have slower servers during peak evening hours. Try watching earlier in the day for the best experience.
